Sleep and recovery in elite athletes1Twenty elite basketball players, thirty minutes of red light every night for fourteen days against a placebo group: sleep quality on the Pittsburgh index, blood melatonin and the twelve-minute run all improved (p<0.05). Better sleep and higher melatonin moved together (r=−0.695). It is a small cohort study, not a large trial.
Skin and collagen2Randomised controlled trial in 128 people, 30 sessions over 15 weeks with red and near-infrared light sources: intradermal collagen density increased and roughness fell versus controls (p<0.001). Wrinkles improved in 69 to 75% of participants, against 4% in the control group.
Muscle performance and fatigue3Systematic review of 39 trials and 861 participants: applied before exercise it improved time to exhaustion, repetitions and isometric peak torque, and lowered lactate. The authors themselves rate the quality of evidence as very low to moderate.
Useful wavelength3The reviewed literature places the useful range between 655 and 950 nm. KumoLux works at 660 nm and 850 nm, inside that window.
Joint comfort4Meta-analysis of 10 placebo-controlled randomised trials and 542 people: moderate effect on pain at rest (SMD −0.7). The authors stress that certainty is very low and that it should not be used in isolation.
